Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to play CRUSH volleyball?

Although the costs have not been set for the 2009 season, generally the cost of registration will be lower than $200 for all teams from 13U to 18U.

What is included in the fee?

Each athlete will get a minimum 2 practices a week and plays at least 6 Play Days (tournaments) during the season. Also each athlete will receive a returnable uniform to use for home and away games. Approximately once every two weeks an athlete will have the opportunity to work further on their individual skills by working with the club’s player development coach in a small group. The player development coach will work to correct and improve individual skill.

Do registration fees cover all my team costs?

Registration fees covers the cost of Play Days entries, uniforms, gym rentals, referees and most costs incurred by the coach. It does not cover the cost of hotels, ferries or food. Generally these costs (except food) are covered by team fund raising. It does not cover shoes, shorts or knee pads (optional). Some teams vote to attend the National Championships. They are held in either Calgary (15U and 16U) or Abbotsford (14U and 13U) and again most of these costs are covered by team fund raising.

When do I play?

Most Play Days are on Sundays and generally last most of the day. Travel for Play Days may be as far away as Victoria. Super Series events are for ages 16U and above which means additional travel to the mainland for at least one series.  The Island and Provincial championships are usually a two day event. The Provincials are usually held on the lower Mainland or the Okanagan.

When does the season start?

Tryouts begin as soon as the school year is finished. The season goes from early January and finishes for most teams in early May.

I play other sports, can I still play CRUSH?

CRUSH is a believer in the federal government’s long term development (LTD) strategy for sport which is a program to encourage volleyball for life and to bring Canada back to being a leader in volleyball in the world. Therefore for athlete 15 and under, CRUSH will work with other associations to try and accommodate other sports.  If other associations are flexible, CRUSH will work will those associations to accommodate the athlete to compete in two sports.  For athlete that are 16U and above, the decision to allow athletes to compete in other sports will be up to the coach.

How do tryouts work?

There will be a minimum of 2 tryouts with a minimum 3 observers present for the team selection process. The goal of the club is to have observers present at each tryout who have never viewed the athletes before. If there are not enough coaches then cuts will have to be made.

Are there boys teams available?

If there are enough athletes and we have coaches then it is the goal of the club to have boys teams.

Is there a younger kids program?

There is a plan for a skills development night for 12U and 13U athletes which will take place once a week. There will be no travelling and the program will last approximately 8 weeks starting near the end of January.
